Welcome to our Engineering Academy. On this two-week programme you’ll explore, design and build structures and machines. You’ll also get exciting opportunities to experience a variety of fields in engineering.

How do every-day objects work? Discover and explore the mathematics and physics that contain the secrets to aeroplanes flying, phones operating, cars and self-driving cars navigating themselves!
What’s it really like to be an engineer? Ask our Hero—a professional engineer—any question and get an insight into how you can use engineering skills in your everyday life.
Can you build an engine? Plan, design, and build an engine with the engineering skills you learn over the two weeks. Put on your thinking caps too as you reflect on how we could make them even better.

Engineering Academy Course Outline
On the Engineering Academy course, you’ll have 9 two-hour classes with your tutor. On the first day, you’ll be introduced to the subject, to your tutor and to the rest of your class. The final class is a surprise topic, chosen by your tutor, which will focus on a cutting-edge area of the field. The other eight classes are outlined below.
1. Aeronautical Engineering
How does a helicopter fly compared to a propeller aircraft? Discover the mechanics of drag and lift, and explore how adding thrust and weight to the equation impacts the aerodynamic design of an aircraft.
2. Electrical Engineering
What are the underlying principles of electricity? Identify how electromagnetism and electricity power and affect different machines.
3. Pneumatic Systems
What are the underlying principles of pneumatic systems? We’ll explore how compressed gasses or air can power machines. You’ll also analyse pneumatic systems with other students, identifying and solving issues, before building your own.
What are the underlying principles of thermodynamic cycles? We’ll explore together the role of thermodynamic cycles in engines and how they’re applied to maximise the efficiency and power of engines.
5. Maths for Engineering
Why is mathematics important for engineering? You’ll look at how simple trigonometry and calculus can be used in engineering, and apply your skills in a mathematics competition.
6. Building an Engine
Can you build an engine? You’ll design and build an engine by applying your new understanding and knowledge to the task. Working together, we’ll reflect on what we’ve built and identify how the engines could be better.
7. Structural Engineering
What does it take to create a framework? Looking at straight ‘members’ that are joined by ‘pins’ to form pin-jointed structures, we’ll explore their design together. You’ll put your knowledge and understanding to the test by building and designing your own structure.
Can you build a hydraulics system? Using Pascal’s law, we’ll explore how fluids can be used to operate machines. You’ll brainstorm solutions to solve real issue in hydraulic systems, and you’ll build your own to test your knowledge.
Are you ready to build and design your own miniature bridge?
You’ll apply what you’ve learned in the Engineering Academy in our bridge challenge to build and design a bridge that’s stronger than all the others!
Your understanding of engineering principles will be put to the test as you:
- Use your understanding of engineering principles and theory through practical projects
- Experience the excitement of decision making and material sourcing
- Develop your ability to collaborate with different members of the team
