Discover Technology Academy
Would you like to discover how machines and computers work? The Discover Technology Academy is an introductory course for students aged 12-14 to the fields of Engineering and Computing, and will help you decide if these are subjects you’d like to pursue further.
Discover Technology Summer School
Welcome to the Discover Technology course. Over two weeks with us, you’ll learn about Computer Science and Engineering, and gain practical experience in these subjects.
In class, you’ll build your very own website, and you’ll also take part in the Rocket challenge, where you’ll design and then launch a rocket! You’ll explore the ways in which mathematics and physics can be applied to real-life situations, and learn why they’re so useful.
The Discover Technology course will suit you if:
- You’re interested in Computer Science and Engineering, and are keen to know more
- You’re considering studying these subjects, or related subjects, at University
- You enjoy Maths and Science, and want to see how they can be used in real life
Our Learning Philosophy
Our summer courses allow you to explore your subject in a hands-on way, because we don’t believe you can decide your future career path just by reading a textbook! On our Discover Technology Academy you will:
Learn about the technological changes that have happened in the past 100 years, and consider what might happen in the next 100!
Meet a Hero – a computer scientist – who uses his technological skills for a living! You’ll be able to ask him questions and see what a day in his life is really like.
Test out your engineering and design skills to launch your own rocket, and build your own website in class!
Scholastica has taught me all of the opportunities for career paths I have, and it additionally allowed me to explore the subject I want to study later on. Tora Ottestad, Norway

Discover Technology Academy Course Outline
On the Discover Technology course, you’ll have 9 two-hour classes with your tutor. On the first day, you’ll be introduced to the subject, to your tutor and to the rest of your class. The final class is a surprise topic, chosen by your tutor, which will focus on a cutting-edge area of the field. The other eight classes are outlined below.
1. Discover Rockets
How do rockets fly? You’ll learn what exactly a rocket is, and examine the different elements that make up a rocket. You’ll work as a team to design your own rocket.
What is electricity? We’ll discuss how various types of machines are powered by electricity, and look at how electricity and electromagnetism work.
What is a photonic system? In this class, we’ll discuss the science behind generating and using the power of light, to discover how photonic systems work. You’ll also look at real-life photonic systems and think about how to solve some of the problems associated with them.
4. Applied Maths
How can I use Maths in real life? We’ll look at the use of algorithms in computing, and at the use of trigonometry and calculus in engineering.
5. Introduction to HTML
How are websites made? You’ll be introduced to HTML and will test out your skills in a coding challenge.
6. Introduction to CSS
What is CSS? In this class, you’ll learn the language CSS and look at the ways it can be used to style a website.
7. Build Your Own Website
This is your chance to practice your skills and make your very own website! You’ll use a combination of HTML and CSS coding to build a website, trying out your favourite features and styles.
8. Technology in the Future
Where is tech going in the 21st century? We’ll discuss examples of recent innovations and consider how they might affect our lives in the future, looking ahead to the year 2100!
Your design and building skills will be put into practice at the Rocket Launch Challenge!
You’ll work with your team to design, build and launch a rocket, while the Discover Business students on your team market and pitch your business plan to investors. You’ll need to innovate and cooperate with others to get the project off the ground (literally)!
- Design a rocket prototype, selecting the optimal materials
- Take responsibility for your rocket’s successful launch, and see how it compares to other teams’!
- Collaborate with Discover Business students to market and pitch your prototype to investors
