Our Learning Philosophy
We believe that the best way to prepare to study medicine is by learning through hands-on experiences. Our Medicine Preparation Academy will enable you to:
What factors should I consider when applying to medical schools?
Medicine courses, as well as application processes, vary between countries and universities. Learn about your options and choose the best one for you.
What is it actually like to be a medic?
Ask our Medicine Hero, a doctor who is working successfully through stages of their career, about their day-to-day experiences in medical school and beyond.
What does a medical degree really involve?
Get an authentic medical student experience by attending lectures, seminars and tutorials, and prepare to take on the Mock Hospital Challenge.
London Scholastica gave me a chance to learn the practical side of medicine in a way that I wouldn’t have experienced at school. I also made great friends and I can simply say that I enjoyed every minute. It is really worth attending. Krista Bonello, Malta

Medicine Preparation Academy Course Outline
Our Medicine Preparation summer course is made up of nine different classes and a four-hour academic Challenge afternoon. You’ll also have an opportunity to hear from and interact with our medical professional Hero in a lecture and Q&A session.
1. Medicine Degrees (UK & Worldwide)
Develop an understanding of various medicine degrees around the world, learn how to choose the right institution for you and gain skills for preparing a strong medical school application.
2. University Skills
Learn and hone the skills that you need to thrive as a medical student. You will practise academic skills and develop your own interest in an area of medicine that fascinates you, through your Independent Study Project.
3. Pre-Clinical Knowledge of Medical Sciences
Excellence in medicine is founded upon sound scientific knowledge. You’ll expand your understanding of the anatomy, biochemistry, pharmacology, physiology, and pathology of a major system of the human body, using traditional pre-clinical teaching.
4. Clinical Skills
It’s important for medical students to be confident in conducting clinical examinations. Practise the skills for common procedures and learn how to utilise a patient’s medical history to make a diagnosis.
5. Problem-Based Learning
“Problem-based learning” approaches are growing in popularity across medical schools, because they are more patient-oriented. Discover your strengths through this style of learning and put your investigative and collaborative skills to use as you work with a team to identify and address patients’ medical issues.
6. Investigative Skills
Investigative skills are important additions to the tool-kit of a medical student. Get to grips with interpreting scans and blood tests, and develop your analytical skills for future decision-making scenarios.
7. Medicine Field Trip
Medical studies are so much more than what happens in the classroom or lecture hall. The field trip is an excellent opportunity to discover and understand the application of medicine in the real world. Last year, students tried out VR technology that’s being used to treat Alzheimer’s disease!
8. Personal Tutorials and Journal Publication
Your tutor will help you improve your verbal and written communication of medical concepts through personal tutorials where you present your Independent Study Project. You’ll also have the chance to publish your research in the Scholastica Journal of Medicine.
9. Your Future in Medicine
Start thinking ahead to your next steps: you will receive individual support on how you can prepare a successful application to medical school and continue to prepare for your medical career.
Mock Hospital Challenge
Are you ready to take on the challenge and put your clinical skills to the test? In the Mock Hospital challenge, you’ll interact with real patients who have chronic medical conditions at St Thomas’ Hospital here in London.
Throughout the challenge your clinical examination skills will be assessed, just like a medical student.
See what it feels like to work as a medical student and doctor by:
- Presenting your patients’ cases and giving advice on their treatment
- Practising mock delivery of news or information in realistic and challenging circumstances
- Fuelling your passion for becoming a doctor!
This is an excellent opportunity to gain highly sought-after real-world work experience in a hospital, which will boost your future university applications.
